Yesterday, I went out on a photo walk with a couple friends from work. We hit Beale Street to be harassed by a homeless lady and linger for shots. I had the Canon F1 loaded with Tri-X and was excited to get back into black and white film in seriousness. I don’t take the LOMO LC-A seriously, so its shots didn’t count.
When I developed the roll, it was apparent there was a light leak. It wasn’t really a light leak in the traditional sense – there were no bad seals. It was more of me not seating the film cartridge properly and causing the door to mostly close leaving a slight seam for light to get in. Yeah, it fogged every shot.
But I really liked a few of the compositions, so today I took my Fujifilm X-T20 out , set the camera to 35mm (50mm equiv) to match the Canon’s lens, and snapped the same photos again. It was weird re-tracing my steps, but I knew exactly which shots I wanted and where they were taken, so it was only about a 15 minute trip.
Thankfully, Fujifilm has an Acros emulation — including one with a yellow filter — so this wasn’t a difficult trip. I have to say I’m actually more impressed with the Fuji shots than I probably would have been with Tri-X. I did run these through Snapseed for the Grainy Film filter set to +30. I do that pretty much with all my digital photos now. I can’t help it, I like grain.
I really like the X-T20. I need to do a 30-day challenge with it. Force myself to tape it off at 35mm and keep it on ACROS for 30 days. Maybe that’ll be my October project. Hmm…
